Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve at the wrist. It often is caused from injury, overuse, or incorrect positioning and use of the hand and wrist.

What is Carpal Tunnel?

Carpal Tunnel is caused by pressure on the median nerve at the wrist. It often is caused from injury, overuse, or incorrect positioning and use of the hand and wrist. With Carpal Tunnel you may experience loss of strength in your hand and wrist as certain muscles are controlled by the median nerve. Other parts of the median nerve or other nerves can also be affected.

Carpal Tunnel can seem to appear overnight, even though you may have been experiencing minor discomfort prior to this.

Carpal Tunnel Symptoms

With Carpal Tunnel you usually experience pins and needles or numbness in the hands, fingers and thumbs.

Improving Your Situation

If you are experiencing pain around your wrist area or suffer with Carpal Tunnel pain, we can happily guide you on your options to improve your level of comfort, and get you on the path to optimal healing.

Sometimes a few simple changes and soft tissue support can significantly improve your healing and level of comfort.

Carpal Tunnel Treatment options

At Hand Rehab we can guide you on your optimal path for healing and minimising discomfort. This may include:

  • Providing advice on ergonomic changes that can help to reduce your symptoms. We can also visit your workplace to review and assess how your workstation/desk is set up for typing and mouse work.
  • Advising on how to reduce awkward and/or repetitive movements.
  • Recommending and providing supportive wrist braces, which can be helpful to position the wrist in the lowest pressure position/s. Wrist braces can be worn just at specific times (e.g. overnight while sleeping). With the wearing of wrist braces, as prescribed by your hand therapist, improvements should be noticed within a week. Please note: it is important to have the correct shape or style of brace prescribed or moulded.
  • In some circumstances, Carpal Tunnel surgery may be required. If so, we can provide a referral for this surgical procedure.
